Scotland is surrounded by sea on three sides which means that the weather is very varied. Records show that May and June are usually drier than July and August. Edinburgh's annual rainfall is only slightly greater than that in London and many of the east coast towns have less annual rainfall than Rome.

January and February are the coldest months, averaging 41°F to 45°F (5°C to 7°C), and summer has average temperatures of 66°F (19°C) during the warmest months of July and August. The coldest areas in Scotland are the highlands which have short winter days and very long summer evenings. The east coast experiences more sunshine but  colder winters than the west.
