London Stansted is a large passenger airport with a single runway and hub for a number of major European low-cost airlines. Stansted Airport is 56km north-east of London, close to Stevenage and Chelmsford just off the M11 motorway at Junction 8. It is the third largest airport serving the London area after London Heathrow and London Gatwick

If you are travelling into London, on leaving the airport follow signs for the M11 and continue south for about 20 minutes until you join the M25 London Orbital motorway at Junction 27 and follow signs into central London.

In April of this year a major expansion program to the existing terminal began and to add nearly 6000 square meters of floor space which is designed to give space for additional baggage carousels, a new immigration and passport control hall and an arrivals hall with improved facilities.

There are six of the major car hire companies at the airport. They are located in the terminal building: Alamo at London Stansted Airport - Avis at London Stansted Airport - Budget at London Stansted Airport - Europcar at London Stansted Airport - Hertz at London Stansted Airport - National at London Stansted Airport

The companies are all open every day, 24 hours, but it would be worth checking at Bank Holidays as they may have restricted hours. You can arrive at the airport and book a car or pre book, which is sometimes often cheaper and saves time.

You can get to and from Stansted Airport by a variety of methods including Private London Stansted Airport Transfers. With a Private Transfer you would be met in the arrivals hall by your own driver who will then take you on to your chosen destination.

On arrival at the airport all areas are clearly signposted to take you through to baggage reclaim, through security and once in arrivals all signs for taxis, local transport and the car parks and car hire are clearly marked. The main airport information desk is located in the international arrivals and is open from 05.30 to 01.30.

The check in area at the airport is on the ground floor of the terminal building. When you walk into the terminal you need to check which check in zone you need to be at. These are clearly visible by a yellow box with a letter in i.e. A, B, C and so on.

A general guide for check in at the airport is:

All charters (package holidays) check in 3 hours prior to departure
Long haul flights check in 3 hours prior to departure (El Al passengers 3.5 hours)
UK and Ireland flights check in 2 hours prior to departure

Boarding is normally 45 minutes prior to departure. Be sure to keep a check on the monitors as there are no calls for flights.

The taxi rank at the airport is just outside arrivals and the reservation desk for the taxi company is in the International arrivals area. There is a very good bus service from the airport into various destinations in the City Centre of London and also National Express Coaches to other parts of the UK.

You will find the bus and coach station at the front of the terminal near to the short stay car park, 15 minute pick up area. You can buy tickets at the coach station as it is open 24 hours/7days. There is a railway station situated just below the terminal building at the airport with good connections into London and surrounding areas. There are plenty of options for parking at the airport, depending on your length of stay will determine which car park you use: short stay, including fast track parking and a 15 minute pick up zone and disabled bays: medium stay, including disabled bays: long stay, including disabled bays and valet parking.
